The only thing to save two old friends from death may also be what kills
them.

Mr. Peters is a successful business owner. Other than dealing with a recent
rash of break-ins, he lives a very satisfying life. That was until a
childhood friend and brilliant scientist paid him a visit.

While the two friends had a troubled past, not speaking for ten years, the
reunion was a happy one. That happiness quickly took a wrong turn as their
lives are threatened.

Now held captive, the use of an experimental drug was the only option. A
top-secret drug that enhanced a person’s will and physicality is the
only thing giving them a fighting chance.

However, there are deadly side effects. Along with enhanced abilities comes
a decrease in mental stability. Moreover, there is more to the kidnappings
than first thought.

Will the two childhood friends maintain their sanity long enough to
survive?

Set in an uncomfortably familiar future…

We built a wall to keep the dangers of the world out…but was it actually
meant to keep us in?

Your every word is monitored. Your every movement watched.

If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear.

And if you stay within the wall, the Loyalist Party will protect you.

Gideon Frome knows that safety is an illusion. Ten years ago, his perfect
life was shattered, and he left Washington DC in disgrace, sentenced to
serve on The Wall. He may be back, lauded as a hero, but he knows he’s
only traded one prison for another, assigned a position to the infamous
Secret Service.

Kate Buchanan uses her illegal predictive engine to monitor the
“chatter,” flagging perceived threats to America. When the
program suggests that nuclear war is imminent, and people around her start
to die, Kate can no longer hide. She needs help, and it comes from the most
unlikely place—Gideon Frome, a ghost from her past.

The American people thought they were safe, but it’s becoming
shockingly clear that the price of safety is too high. And somehow,
together, Kate and Gideon must tear down the walls that keep their country a
prisoner.

Excerpt
Gideon shifted the weight from his left foot. His leg was beginning to ache, and he rubbed at his thigh. He’d taken a piece of shrapnel there five years ago, at the same time he’d gotten the scar on his face, and it still gave him problems.
How long until he could leave? Too long, at a guess.
Christ, had he actually enjoyed these events in the past? It seemed inconceivable. However, if he wanted his life back, he was going to have to suck it up and look like he belonged. Act like he belonged. And maybe if he did it long enough, he might actually feel like he belonged.
The problem was, he couldn’t bring himself to care.
The room was crowded. Anyone and everyone had clamored for an invitation to the party of the year. Plus, there were a large number of security agents. More than he remembered from the past. Men in the black uniforms of the president’s personal bodyguards—selected from the elite of the Secret Service—stood at the doors, while others mingled with the crowd. There was even a sniper on the second-floor interior balcony, covering the room.
Either Harry was paranoid, or there was an elevated threat level. If so, no one had told Gideon about it. That was hardly surprising; he suspected that no one, with maybe the exception of Harry himself, actually wanted him there.
But he wanted answers, and this was where he would find them.
Once he had those answers, then…
Who knew? Though revenge wasn’t the solution.
Most of the time he believed that.
Harry was making the rounds, shaking hands and smiling as he headed this way. Gideon wasn’t sure whether he would be acknowledged, but the president halted in front of him. He was flanked by two Secret Service officers, dressed in their black uniforms. Harry’s army, as they were known within the service.
He took the proffered hand. Harry’s grip was firm, and his smile was sparkling. Good dental work.
“Happy birthday, sir,” he said.
“Thank you. I’m glad you could make it.”
“I was grateful for the invitation, Mr. President.”
“We must all practice forgiveness.”
He could feel his muscles tightening. He’d done nothing that needed fucking forgiving. Neither had his father. For a second, he felt an echo of the dark anger that had been his companion for the first few years after his father’s death. He pushed it down and forced a smile. “Thank you, sir. I appreciated the chance to come home.”
“You’re a hero now, Gideon. You saved America from invasion. The people love you. We need heroes at a time like this.”
At a time like what? He’d seen the polls. There was a good chance that Harry would keep his position when—or maybe if—it came to an election. “Your approval ratings are higher than ever, sir.”
“Maybe,” the man mused. “But I’ve been feeling lately that they don’t appreciate me. That needs to change.”
“Yes, sir.”
“I must go now, but we’ll talk again.” Harry smiled and patted Gideon on the shoulder, and his guards stiffened at the contact. Christ, they were jumpy.
Gideon watched as the group walked away. Harry had always needed constant approval. It came from growing up in his father’s shadow; Harry Senior had been larger than life and an impossible act to follow. Charismatic. People loved him and would follow him anywhere. No doubt his son had always believed he was second-best.
Trouble was, he was right.

 Excerpt
That first date with Preston checked all the boxes. We strolled and laughed and acted silly. I did see him take a few sips from a silver flask as we went from bar to bar up one side of Sixth and down the other. But he didn’t seem too inebriated and he didn’t try to force me to drink, either.
Halfway through the night, we morphed into a large group. He wasn’t kidding about some of his friends joining us. We seemed to pick up one or two more at each place we stopped. They were all high or drunk. I didn’t see anyone sober other than us—well, me. Preston may have been sober, but each bar was so loud and jam-packed, conversation became more and more impossible. All I had to go on was how well he could walk.
Some of our group couldn’t even do that.
Lines of people snaked away down the packed sidewalks and away from the entrances to every place that featured music. The whole street throbbed with sound and the entire downtown area felt wrapped in laughter and drenched in lights.
Later, he wanted us to go to the lake to go skinny dipping with his friends. But that wasn’t me. Not at all. “Please take me home,” I said. But he refused.
Come on,” he said. “It’ll be fun.”
When I refused, he turned on the road leading there anyway.
I insisted he let me out.
He slowed and stopped, calling my bluff.
I took a deep breath, stepped out, and started walking back the way we had come. Though my outside appearance was calm, my insides were like waves white-capping near the shore. It was a long way back to the main road. I hoped and prayed someone I knew would come along and give me a ride. It wouldn’t be Joanna, though. She and Antonio were doing the Zombie Walk again. This time there would be a prize for the best look. How I wished I’d gone with them.
When Preston realized I wasn’t bluffing, he turned the car around and drove alongside me as I strode down the shoulder of the road, arms crossed over my chest.
I could hear him attempting to apologize, but this time his words fell into the gap between us like pebbles dropped into a dry well. “I was only joking,” he said. “You know I would never make you do anything you didn’t want.”

Leeds Central Train Station

It was late in the afternoon, four-zero-eight to be exact. Leeds Central
Train Station was a hub of activity. Commuters rushed on and off carriages,
shoving others in the process. Loudspeakers chimed and calmly announced
arrival and departure times. The odour of fumes, the chugging of
engines—a cacophony of sounds and smells crowded the senses. The
excitement of the weekend filled the air.

She carefully stepped off the train onto the platform. She wasn’t
used to the cheap, shiny, black, knee-high boots she’d chosen for the
evening. She hurried with the crowd to the exit of the station, tugging on
her clothes as she walked. Nothing she wore was comfortable. Her black
fishnet stockings chafed the skin behind her knees, and her tight
black-leather miniskirt prevented her legs from walking with her regular
stride.

The sun was about to set, and as she stepped outside into the frigid air,
she realized that the white, torn T-shirt—covered by the blue
Levi’s denim jacket she was wearing—was a poor choice. Her only
saving grace from the cold was the heavy blonde wig that she’d
purchased, like everything else she was wearing, from everyone’s
favourite thrift shop, Oxfam. She pulled her jacket closed and held it
together with her right hand, as she slung the grotesque, pink worn handbag
over her left shoulder. She rolled her shoulders forwards and shivered,
pulled the large, circular sunglasses from her face, and stuffed them into
her bag. Hopefully no one would recognize her; after all, she was famous for
her thick, dark eyebrows and exquisite, sapphire eyes. She hoped that the
heavy purple eye shadow and exaggerated pink blush would do the trick.

She rushed to the nearest taxi and slammed the door as she slid into the
back seat. “Drop me at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance,
love,” she said, hoping her thick Yorkshire accent would be accepted
as legitimate.

“Not a chance, darling,” the driver replied, shaking his head
slowly as he looked back at her. She held out a crisp twenty-pound note. He
snatched it from her without a second thought. “It’s your
funeral, love!” he said.
