Sophia Rose thought she understood numbers—until she found something impossible to calculate.
Sophia Rose lives her life by the numbers—mostly because her father, a high-level analyst, doesn’t leave room for anything else. But when the Paper Palace, a historic Huntsville bookstore with a five-degree lean, is slated for demolition, Sophia discovers a variable that doesn’t fit on a spreadsheet.
Armed with a 5-ton floor jack, a stash of PVC piping, and a 1924 tax map that reveals a secret flowing beneath the city’s streets, Sophia and a brooding young engineer named Leo set out to do the impossible: prove that the building isn’t falling, it’s standing its ground.
But as the Alabama summer heat rises and a ruthless developer closes in, Sophia must decide if she’s willing to let her world be flattened for “progress”—or if she’s ready to become the most dangerous variable in the room.
